Safety & FAQs

Candle Safety

Each candle includes care and lighting instructions on the bottom label. Candles add a fragrant enhancement to living and work spaces and are safe to enjoy, but we encourage care and attention to the following guidelines:

  • Always burn candles in a well-ventilated room and on a heat-resistant surface.
  • Do not leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Avoid drafts, vents, ceiling fans or other moving air pathways to encourage even burning and minimize smoke or a flickering wick.
  • Never touch a burning candle or move a candle when the wax is liquid.
  • Never extinguish candles with water.
  • Make sure a candle is completely extinguished before leaving the room.
  • Keep candles out of the reach of small children and pets.
  • Never burn a candle on or near anything that can catch fire.

Burning Your Candle

Always trim your wick to 1/8” - 1/4” before lighting. Every time. Your candle will burn longer, cleaner and more evenly.

For the initial burn, allow the candle to create a full melted wax pool across the entire candle. This will ensure even burning and maximum fragrance release for the life of your candle and is typically achieved within 3 hours.

For subsequent lightings we recommend a burn time of 3-4 hours, fully melting the wax across the top each time.

If your wick begins smoking or flickering excessively, extinguish the flame and trim the wick – then relight the candle.

Keep the wax pool clear of wick trimmings, matches and debris at all times.

Use care when extinguishing the candle; a short, directed puff of air aimed at each wick is usually sufficient.

Do not move candles until the wax is cooled and set. Use caution as containers can be hot to the touch.

Discard candles when there is 1/4 inch of wax remaining.

Enjoy your candles!

Consider using several candles for a permeating fragrance in large spaces with high ceilings or open floor plans.

Essential Oil Safety

Essential oils are wonderfully aromatic, but it is important to diffuse them sensibly and cautiously, especially around pets and children.

  • Knapp Essential's diffuser blends are ONLY intended for use in home diffusers. NEVER ingest or use for topical applications.

  • Familiarize yourself with general safety information for the oils contained in your blend (all oils are listed on the bottles / candles). You can start doing that by exploring AromaWeb's Essential Oil Directory featuring over 130 essential oil profiles and reading the safety information that they contain.

  • Essential oils are highly concentrated. They should not be continuously diffused. It is recommended to diffuse essential oils for 30-60 minutes on, then 30-60 minutes off - never constantly and never all day long. Also, be sure you are diffusing in a well ventilated space.

  • Refer to the instructions that came with your diffuser. Do not exceed to amount of essential oil recommended in the instructions.

  • Do not diffuse more essential oil than is necessary. Essential oils should not be diffused in significant concentration. Knapp Essentials recommends that no more than 3 drops be added to the diffuser at a time.

  • Olfactory fatigue is a phenomenon where you are no longer able to easily perceive an aroma, even if the aromatic molecules are still present. Do not add more oils than recommended if it seems the aroma is weaker. Instead, take a break from diffusing oils or switch to another blend.

  • If diffusing around cats and other pets, be sure they aren't confined strictly to the room in which you are diffusing. Allow them to leave the area if they need to.

  • Knapp Essentials does not recommend using essential oils around children, especially young children. If diffusing around children, use the minimum amount and refer the list below for essential oils that should NOT be diffused around children as they are potential mucous irritants. Additionally, blends with cedarwood or eucalyptus should not be used around children.

Frequently Asked Questions

What wax do you use?

We use soy wax in our candles - natural, sustainable, vegan and non-toxic. You can expect an even and long-lasting burn from our candles.

Do you use essential oils?

We use essential oils in all of our essential oil candles, blends, and room sprays. We also use high-quality, clean fragrance oils that contain essential oil components for our clean fragrance candle collection. In addition, all of our fragrance oils are free of phthalates, carcinogens, reproductive toxins, and other potentially harmful chemicals.

What essential oils do you use?

Our essential oils are purchased in bulk from a reputable company right here in Virginia. The oils used in our candles are chosen based on a number of factors since not all oils work well in candles and may be phased out over time due to quality and performance during candle making and burning.

Can I make recommendations for blends?

Absolutely! Feel free to contact us with any suggestion, but please know that not all oils will work in our candles. Instead, we offer a diverse line of diffuser blends for use in traditional home diffusers.

What about dyes or other additives?

Our candles are natural wax and fragrance only, and we use cotton wicks free of metal, zinc and lead. We do use dyes in some of our wax melts, but offer dye free wax melts for those who prefer dye-free products.

What size candle do I need for my space?

For essential oil candles, begin with one candle even in larger rooms. This is due to the concentrated nature of our essential oils. For clean fragrance candles, one candle works great in bathrooms, kitchens, bedrooms and typically sized living/work spaces. Larger rooms or spaces with high ceilings or open floor plans may need multiple candles for the best fragrance permeation. You can have multiple candles of the same scent, or mix and match them for your own unique blend.

Can your containers be reused?

Yes! Once there is about 1/4 inch of wax left, stop using the candle. Use caution and care when removing the remaining wax, wicks and any labeling. Our suggestion is to gently scrape out the wax and wicks/wick stickers with a plastic utensil (discard all wax in the trash - never put wax down the drain or garbage disposal). For jars:  place the container in hot soapy water to soften any residue and labels, and wash, rinse and dry. For cement vessels: Avoid water and use a dry paper towel or old rag to wipe out remaining wax. Note: we assume no liability for candle containers or subsequent results of reuse by the consumer, once purchased.

When will I get my shipment?

We ship packages every day of the week, except for Sundays. Please allow 2 business days for processing. Due to extended shipment time as a result of COVID and increased demand, our preferred method of USPS Priority takes between 2-4 days, subject to USPS.

Do you ship outside the U.S.?
Not at this time.
